April 2024
Attention to public health issues is key to improving the health and wellbeing of the population in the Sendafa Beke community. Since Project Adopt A Village (PAAV) began in 2006 there has been significant focus on addressing public health challenges. Currently the following list of activities summarizes some of the efforts that Dr. Frew and the PAAV team are currently doing to improve the public health for the people that PAAV serves:
- Health education: Each year 2560+children and adults receive health education regarding HIV/AIDS, hygiene, hand washing, nutrition, pregnancy, breast feeding, and prevention of infectious diseases. This is done in schools, the Sendafa Health Center and during community meetings.
- Anti-AIDS awareness teachings during World's AIDS day and periodically in bars, drinking places, marketplace, cross country bus stop
- Providing sanitary pads to female students in schools and to mothers
- Producing health education materials (leaflets, posters, billboards) and distributing them throughout Sendafa Beke
- Nutritional support: Since 2006, 12,000 infants and toddlers between 6 months and 2 years old have been given nutritional support with powdered food preparations fortified with vitamins, minerals and iron to fight malnutrition.
- Sanitation: A number of latrines have been constructed and most recently a large bottle house latrine at the hospital. We are partnering now with Rotary International to build 2 more large 8 stall latrines - one at the Sendafa Health Center and one in the poorest community in Sendafa.
